Nathan Brown (b. 1987) is a composer and trombonist based in the Kansas City area. He earned MM's in composition and trombone performance from Central Michigan University in 2015, and BM's in the same at Fort Hays State University in 2011. Brown has studied composition from David Gillingham, Jay Batzner, Timothy Rolls, and Jeff Jordan. Trombone studies have been with Robert Lindahl, Lane Weaver, Gary Brattin, and Steven Lueth.
Among his honors have been commissions by the CMU New Music Ensemble and Trombone Choir, as well as the FHSU Brass Choir. He has also received performances from the CMU Chamber Singers, CMU Symphony Orchestra, FHSU Wind Ensemble, and Fort Hays Singers. Awards include winning the 2013 ACDA Choral Composition Competition, CMU Chapter ("The Painters, 1943"); the 2014 CMU 11th Annual Orchestra Composition Contest ("Grey Hill"); 2008, Presser Foundation Award and Scholarship.
Recent performances include the premiere of the band version of Grey Hill by the Mid America Freedom Band, and a performance of Hocket & Lock-It for Trombone Octet at the 2019 International Trombone Festival in Muncie, IN.
As a trombonist, Brown has earned placement in top ensembles including CMU's Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Jack Williamson, cond.), FHSU's Wind Ensemble (Jeff Jordan, cond.), Jazz I ensemble (Brad Dawson, cond.), and Hays Symphony Orchestra (Benjamin Cline, cond.). Brown was placed 2nd chair in the 2009 and 2010 Kansas Intercollegiate Honor Band. He earned 2nd place in the 2010 Hays Symphony Orchestra Young Musician Concerto Competition (Larsson: Trombone Concertino).
